Pieter Bruegel painted, signed and dated this small, charming, and at the same time puzzling painting in 1562, seven years before his death. It features two chained monkeys set against a backdrop of the city of Antwerp. In 2019, to mark the 450th anniversary of the year of his death, various European museums have been celebrating the artist, with one of the major events being the exhibition.. “Brueghel’s Two Monkeys” by Wislawa Szymborska, Stanislaw Baranczak, (trans.), and Clare Cavanagh, (trans.) was published in the print edition of the March 22, 1993, issue of The New Yorker.
